With a load of limestone coming out of Marblehead, Capt. Jeremy Mock, master of the 711-foot Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder, scans the horizon. It’s 20 minutes past five o’clock in the morning on an early summer day. From his 72-foot eye-sight on the bridge, Mock already can see the red sliver of first light coming across the lake.

Last week, I had the chance to tag along as the Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder traveled the Cuyahoga River, delivering iron ore to ArcelorMittal Cleveland. Capt. Joseph Ruch will be home for Christmas — but that's not always been the case for the Fort Gratiot resident. Ruch is the master of the M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar, one of the nine active vessels traveling the Great Lakes for the Interlake Steamship Co. He got his first ship in 1977, so he'll have been a Great Lakes sailor for 40 years come the new year.September 6, 2015
Coal shipments are down, but the iron ore business remains strong, as Middleburg Heights-based Interlake Steamship Co. is finishing $100 million in improvements to the company's fleet of nine Great Lakes freighters. And that's on top of normal maintenance, which will run more than $20 million this winter, a bit more than usual.
